STIR/SHAKEN is a method of authenticating calls that traverse the United States’ telecommunications network. The TRACED Act and FCC regulations generally require providers of voice services to implement it on their networks. Convoso has fully implemented STIR/SHAKEN in its systems. Below is a more technical definition of STIR/SHAKEN from the official FCC website, along with links to additional information:
“STIR/SHAKEN is a framework of interconnected standards. STIR/SHAKEN are acronyms for the Secure Telephone Identity Revisited (STIR) and Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using toKENs (SHAKEN) standards. This means that calls traveling through interconnected phone networks would have their Caller ID "signed" as legitimate by originating carriers and validated by other carriers before reaching consumers. STIR/SHAKEN digitally validates the handoff of phone calls passing through the complex web of networks, allowing the phone company of the consumer receiving the call to verify that a call is, in fact, from the number displayed on the Caller ID.”

When we sign calls with a full Attestation, the highest level under STIR/SHAKEN, we affirm that we know the caller and the caller’s right to use the Caller ID value presented. If we do not properly sign calls we may lose our ability to sign calls, and traffic from our network may be blocked by carriers.
IMPORTANT: This means that clients have to use DIDs we provide to them to make calls from our network. Clients can no longer use numbers provided by different carriers as Caller IDs when placing calls from their account. If a client wishes to continue using a specific number that we did not provide to them, then that number must be Ported in to allow us to sign calls with full Attestation under STIR/SHAKEN.
