Set Maximum Call Attempts is used to indicate how many times you are allowed to call a customer before the dialer will stop adding the number to the hopper to be dialed.
This is more for you benefit than a restriction as the more times you run through a list of numbers you get to a point where you only have numbers left that always go to answering machine or never pick up the phone. To reduce having those numbers constantly dialed you can specify that once you have dialed a certain number 5 times you don't want it added to the hopper anymore because it is unlikely that the person will pick up.
